Hit the Barrel in Historic Surroundings – Free

Kick off the Fastelavn celebrations with free barrel hitting for children at the Copenhagen Museum.

Bring the youngest members of the family to the Copenhagen Museum and let them experience traditional Fastelavn barrel hitting in historic surroundings. The youngest children (ages 0–5) can take part from 10:00 to 11:00, while slightly older children (ages 6–12) get their turn from 11:00 to 12:00.

Fastelavn is a Danish tradition rooted in old Nordic and European carnival traditions. Today, the celebration is mostly for children, where they dress up in costumes, decorate barrels, and take part in the classic game of “hitting the barrel” filled with candy, to become Fastelavn king or queen.

Once the Fastelavn kings and queens have been crowned, Café Spirrevippen tempts visitors with homemade cake, light lunches, and hot and cold drinks. Fastelavn guests of all ages can enjoy creative Fastelavn activities in the museum hall or explore the exhibitions.

Admission is free for the barrel hitting, Fastelavn crafts, and exhibitions. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
