Inuit in Copenhagen - Taking Back the Narratives

Nine participants share personal video works about identity and belonging. Experience screenings, presentations and conversations at Union on March 23.

What does it mean to be Inuk today? What do we stand up for when we encounter ignorance, prejudice, violence and colonial structures? Is it even possible to create space for understanding, community, storytelling and creativity? Can it be done through art?

Through two intensive workshops, nine participants have investigated these very questions – using singing, dancing, storytelling, music, conversations, walks, exercises, games and silence as tools. In collaboration with filmmaker Inuk Jørgensen, they have each created a short, personal video work.

This evening, the works will be shown for the first time. The participants will introduce their processes, and artist and workshop leader Karina Moeller will give a presentation about working with art as a method. Afterwards, we will open a joint conversation about how art and storytelling can create understanding, build bridges and provide new perspectives on identity and community.

The event is part of TRAST – Transmedia Stories of Insularity – a Creative Europe project with partners in several European countries. The project works with groups who in different ways experience being outside the majority, and investigates how artistic narratives can create dialogue and change.

The evening is aimed at anyone with an interest in art, identity, minority perspectives and communities – and for those who are curious about how personal narratives can open new spaces for reflection.
