Opening * The Answer * Maria Wæhrens

We look forward to welcoming you on Wednesday 26 August from 16:00–21:00, when we celebrate the opening of "The Answer" by Maria Wæhrens at Nikolaj Kunsthal.

The evening’s DJ line-up is hosted by the party collective Rewild, who are also curating this year’s fourth Platform exhibition, created by Johan Bech Jespersen.

About Maria Wæhrens and "The Answer"
In "The Answer" (Svaret), Maria Wæhrens takes over the Upper Gallery with a sensuous total installation in expressive painting. Here, the paintings do not simply hang on the walls — they hover and rise freely in the space as large, tactile surfaces that visitors can move around. Wæhrens has also painted directly onto the raw brick walls using the classical egg tempera technique.

The exhibition is her largest institutional solo exhibition in Copenhagen to date and takes its point of departure in a dream in which an angel appeared to her. Bringing together body, dreams, spirituality and memory, Wæhrens’ painting unfolds as one expansive spatial composition in close dialogue with the architecture of Nikolaj Kunsthal.

Maria Wæhrens (b. 1976) graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and lives and works in Copenhagen. Her works are represented in the collections of SMK – National Gallery of Denmark, Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg and the New Carlsberg Foundation.

The Answer is on view at Nikolaj Kunsthal from 27 August 2026 to 10 January 2027.
