ICELANDIC FILM NIGHT: DEVILS ISLAND aka “Djöflaeyjan

Experience a poignant Icelandic story of family, resilience and social change in post-war Reykjavik.

We screen Devil’s Island (Djöflaeyjan) from 1996, directed by Friðrik Þór Friðriksson – a gritty, humorous and heartfelt portrayal of life in Reykjavik after World War II. When British and American forces leave their military bunkers behind, the structures become makeshift homes for hundreds of working-class families moving to the capital in search of opportunity.

The film follows these families as they navigate poverty, identity and cultural upheaval, all told with warmth, sharp humour and deep humanity. It offers a vivid snapshot of Icelandic society in the 1950s and the challenges faced by those living on the margins.

The film is screened with English subtitles and is part of Icelandic Film Night, highlighting notable works from Icelandic cinema.
