Ida Duelund + support: Isak Schiødt | CPH Jazz Festival
Bassist and composer, Ida Duelund has in recent years managed to move freely across an array of communities and generations both in the alternative and established Copenhagen music scene. She debuted as a solo artist last year with the surrealist album, Sibo, for which she received two Danish Grammys.
Her songs and compositions are characterised by a complete dedication to playfulness and interplay between the musicians and a careless disregard for genres and trends. She moves effortlessly, almost ruthlessly through musical history as if mixing a bag of fantastical lollies.
For Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Duelund has meticulously gathered a group of musicians from very different corners of the Danish jazz- and alternative music scene. Together they will interpret her recent works in a musical collage where improvisations weave in and out between Duelund’s surrealistic songs and compositions.
She has worked with artists such as Baby In Vain, ML Buch, Jada, Barbro and Marilyn Mazur, and is a founding member of the experimental string duo Lueenas.
Support: Isak Schiødt
Isak Schiødt’s music is rooted in minimalist repetition and explores the solitary acoustic saxophone in a room all by itself. The music is difficult to pin down to a single genre, but draws inspiration from jazz, ambient, techno, and J.S. Bach. Furthermore, Isak’s playing stands on the shoulders of saxophone heroes such as Pharoah Sanders, Lars Greve, Maria Dybbroe, Colin Stetson, and John Coltrane.
By using so-called “extended techniques” on the saxophone, Isak Schiødt aims to pull the instrument out of its traditional sonic universe and make it sound like you’ve never heard it before. Among other things, he will work on singing and playing simultaneously, playing with overtone blowing, and using the saxophone’s keys as percussive elements. Furthermore, the concert will test his physical abilities in terms of breathing and finger dexterity.
Over the years, Isak Schiødt has made a name for himself as a prominent figure on the Copenhagen jazz and underground scene with the jazz/rock band Nausia, and through numerous collaborations with Jesper Zeuthen, Barselona, Uden Ord, TS. Høeg, kingtommi, Simon Toldam, and the Absalon String Quartet.
As GAFFA wrote, “Isak Schiødt goes wild on a wind instrument.” Come see if GAFFA is telling the truth.
