Tatsuya Yoshida x Risa Takeda (JP) + Jeppe Zeeberg solo

Tokyo’s most notable improv duo right now is coming to HUSET.

The duo consists of Tatsuya Yoshida, arguably the most powerful drummer on the avant-prog scene, and Risa Takeda (piano/keyboard), who is currently attracting huge attention on Tokyo’s improv scene. An unparalleled musical worldview created by exciting contrasts and harmony that unfolds at breakneck speed. Expect a highly structured and improvised performance that moves freely between classical, contemporary music, progressive rock, and jazz rock. The duo’s performance will overwhelm the audience with the sound of an entire band, even though it is performed by just two musicians.

Drummer Tatsuya Yoshida, the undisputed king of Japanese prog and underground music, is best known for the group Ruins, which he founded in 1985. Ruins pushed the boundaries of improvisational jazz and fusion. Yoshida has also made his mark in a wide variety of contexts, including the ensembles Kōenji Hyakkei and Zeni Geva, as well as in John Zorn and Bill Laswell’s “Painkiller” and in one of the later incarnations of the legendary Gong. Yoshida is joined by pianist Risa Takeda. Takeda’s piano arrangements of Frank Zappa’s material have been praised worldwide. She has also collaborated with Mani Neumeier from the German band Guru Guru.

Pianist and composer Jeppe Zeeberg will open the evening with a short solo concert. Zeeberg’s versatile, genre-defying style has been described as “a beautiful, convincing proposal for how modern jazz or contemporary music may sound” by the American magazine All About Jazz, and he occasionally—like Yoshida and Takeda—experiments with the formal elements of progressive rock.
